Would-be assassin Ryan Wesley Routh was arrested Sunday while allegedly attempting to shoot Trump at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. His plans were reportedly undermined after a Secret Service agent spotted the barrel of his rifle near the next hole Trump would play on the golf course, and was able to interrupt the alleged planned assassination.
Users on X quickly slammed the tweet as “appalling and indefensible”, some accusing him of “inciting violence.”
Early on Monday Musk deleted the tweet but, rather than apologize, argued that the “joke” was just misunderstood.
He went on to share a reel compiled by another user that showed liberal cable commentators, celebrities and Democratic lawmakers “calling for” political violence.

The context is that he’s a government contractor who publicly “will no one rid me of this turbulent priest”-ed the sitting U.S. VP and leading ticket in this year’s election.
