Nippon Steel reveals exchanges with US union Nippon Steel has revealed its communications with the United Steelworkers union concerning its takeover of US Steel.

The Japanese steelmaker says it decided to share its exchanges with USW leaders given what it calls “public mischaracterizations” of their communications.

These include allegations that the company has been rejecting negotiations with the union.

The disclosed information shows that Nippon Steel contacted the union the day the acquisition plan was announced, saying it intended to respect labor agreements.

It also shows the union has opposed the deal from the start.

But Nippon Steel maintained its intention to meet with USW leaders to provide them with detailed explanations.

The company says it has tried to “create the best possible environment for good-faith negotiations.”
