I found this article over the weekend: Breaking Down OnlyFans’ Stunning Economicswhich collects public data on OnlyFans’ balance sheets and some other available information and analyses its mechanisms.
I invite you to read it, if you are interested in the topic, some things are more or less known, I report here the points that I think are more interesting and quantified:
The balance sheet confirms that the real money is made with additional transactions, subscriptions have grown, but little (+9%), while purchases in addition to subscriptions have grown by 70% and are worth more than half of the revenue (60%).
It also remains in a unique niche where creators can easily advertise on other social networks (Instagram, X and even here on Reddit), without major problems, a move that is very difficult and with more difficulty in other sectors, in my opinion because creators have realized that half of their job is exactly this, that is, creating content for social networks. "traditional" and then move a portion of followers to the paid site; in practice they create free, engaging content for platforms because a minority is willing to pay for other content on another platform.
They are also unique in monetization, they manage to run a site (and not an app) with a solid payment circuit behind it; for most companies working in porn it is much more difficult to collect money. Obviously being a site, they do not have to pay any "already" to Apple/Google, so they can pay their creators better, 80% of the revenue.
They even pay better, or so it seems, than traditional porn channels and so they are increasingly eating up the competition, like the various Hubs and the like.
And it all stands not so much for the actual porn, but because someone is willing to pay to have a relationship with a sexy person, even though it is obvious that the more subscribers the person has, the less likely it is that they will actually respond. I quote translated:
We should recognize that many fans are paying for parasocial relationships and connection fantasies, rather than just photos and videos.
A figure that is difficult to visualize: in 2023, OnlyFans paid out 5.3 billion to its creators.
To give you an idea, they are CINQUE Serie A, which will pay 1.06 billion in salaries in 24/25.
Sure, OnlyFans has just over 4 million creators, while Serie A has around 600.
