  1. Come on Lammy, Starmer’s not short of a few quid. He doesn’t need clothes donated by a crony in order to look half decent on the world stage.

Labour said that they would be above this kind of behaviour, but they’ve shown themselves to be more of the same.

  2. If the clothes are for state visits, it should be on state expenses because they are representing the country, not getting them from donations. If the clothes are for personal use, they shouldn’t be using the office’s reputation to receive donations.

Either way it’s a horrible look for Keir Starmer. He promised to clean up politics but he’s shown himself to be no different from the Tories.

  3. Another difficult decision from Starmer’s Labour. It must be incredibly challenging for them to tell everyone else to tighten their belts and accept less while they’re apparently enjoying donations from every millionaire with a vested interest in the country.

In any other professional environment, if I was accepting donations from someone in the same industry for any reason (including to buy suits to ‘look my best’ in meetings) I’d be called straight to my bosses office to have my knuckles wrapped about a conflict of interest. But apparently in politics we’re just meant to accept this is all above board and honest? Bullshit.

  4. The old joke about politicians having to wear badges/ logos of their sponsors on their clothes like racing drivers springs to mind.

  5. amazing how quick party MPs are to over look the same thing, if its committed by their own leader.

  6. All this and only a few months in!

Has anyone got a spare lettuce lying around?

Did anyone have bungs and dodgy freebies on their bingo card so soon?

I haven’t been following the news of late but by the headline I’m assuming and think it’s pretty admirable him and his Mrs are getting clothes from the sally ann

  8. Team Red will downvote this into oblivion.

It’s totally fine for their precious Kier, the UK’s saviour, to take a fucking ton of bribes.

No different to the one’s he pretends to stand against.

“Sir” Kier is a multi-millionaire in his own right, why is another man buying his wife clothes? What he gets up to in the privacy of his own home is his business of course, but now it’s every taxpayer’s business too.

  10. I don’t remember in my living history a government falling from grace as dramatically after an election won on a message of hope than this one.

Stop acting surprised and grow up.

A socialist politician telling all their ‘comrades’ in the country to tighten their belts whilst living in luxury themselves including designer clothes for the missus.

Bears also defecate in the woods.

What did he do with all his money? He had a very good wages from 2008 onwards at least. There’s no reason why he shouldn’t have at least 300k -500k in cash or investments when you add everything up.

    Corruption 101.

Probably why new new Labour sabotaged the previous bloke who was putting a stop to all of that.

  14. The PM gets about £160,000 a year, what’s that money going towards if he can’t afford even just £150 or so on a normal M&S suit like most people? Primark exists if he’s really that skint

All the policies I can sort of squirrel away in my head as part of a wider plan, but things like this make me realise all politicians are the same (except Corbyn and a few rare others).

Doesn’t feel like adult politics. I work in the NHS and can’t accept gifts from people, and all I can do is prescribe drugs, not influence national policy

  16. I have been beating the drum of giving them a chance and they are in a bad situation to solve and so on.

But this was wrong and easily avoided. Either declare it, or don’t accept it (the better option).

    It’s not a good look.

  17. Why is anyone surprised that someone with an act of parliament for his own pension thinks rules apply to other people?

Starmer is Britain’s answer to Olav Schloz.

  18. Free stuff! He clearly understands that you don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.
Boris had free stuff, has much as I didn’t like some policy stuff. It’s free stuff…. free stuff… oh no free stuff… I’ve been poor I still love free stuff

  19. He should have hit the local charity shops. The local Sally Army one has some biker-style jackets that looked right out of Mad Max.

I’m just mad they were not the right size for me lol.

If this was the Tories taking tens of thousands of pounds in free clothing Lammy would be up in arms – the hypocrisy of politicians is staggering.

Additionally didn’t Keir recently have on a £1500 hooded top someone either gifted or gave him the money to buy? Is that “looking his best” or something that could have been achieved for 5% of that amount?

Increasing tax on men and women who work whilst accepting tens of thousands of pounds for clothing for themselves and their wives from people trying to curry favour with them is incredibly fucking grating.

So if one of the suppliers to the company I work for brought me an expensive fancy suit that would be OK because it helps me to look good at work.

  22. Informal_Drawing on

Can we hurry up and centrally fund political parties to remove this nonsense from my news feed.

  23. I think they tell on themselves why this is all happening when the likes of Lammy call Starmer’s wife “the first lady”.

We don’t have a first lady because we don’t have a president. Starmer is not the president. No one in Britain wants to see his wife in a twenty grand dress.

Meanwhile the women who will likely one day be queen, Kate, wears dresses from Reiss.

Basically their whole world view is taken from the waking nightmare which is American politics. They aren’t relevant to the UK or its people. They aren’t even helpful. They aren’t even often relevant to Americans, it’s a Hollywood produced politics. The things they think people will love might be appreciated in the US but not here. Most people will be horrified at just the price of the dress, never mind the corruption which paid for it.

  24. This country desperately needs a grass roots progressive left wing movement. The two main parties are at the trough of corporate interests and just alternate austerity and neolib policies. The only alternative atm is the reform party and their relentless anti immigration drive led by grifters that must be opposed.

Man gets paid a decent salary. He can afford his own fucking clothes.

Utterly pathetic anyone trying to defend this.

  26. Multimillionnaire Kings Council Kier Starmer can’t afford clothes on his £150k salary (with no food or housing costs)?

What is the world coming too?

  27. Dazzling_Ad_7873 on

    UK is a cesspit

English, Irish, (i don’t really know too much about Welsh politics) and Scottish politics are fucking disgusting

I’m Scottish, and I had hope for sno, but no corrupt insular disgusting community

Tories; ruined and pillaged the country

I had hoped that labour taking back the reigns could reverse some damage done (Brexit) but Starmer just seems like a tory dressed as a red

  28. Someone’s forgetting that Kier Starmer IS a millionaire. No he’s nowhere near as rich as Rishi Sunak, but he can definitely afford nice clothes for him and his wife.

On top of the £160k or so he’s entitled to claim as salary while PM.
