“A BMW driver who told police “just fine me as I have plenty of cash” while illegally parked outside a school has not paid a £30 fine, it has emerged.

The woman was issued with a traffic offence report after she parked on yellow zig-zags outside Trinity Academy Primary School, in Richmond, in May.

When approached by an officer about the parking, the driver said “just fine me as I have plenty of cash”.

However, Inspector Martin Metcalfe, from Richmondshire neighbourhood policing team, said in an update today that the woman had not paid the £30 fine and could now face a court appearance.

The officer said: “I made her a very kind offer of just a £30 fine and she did not pay it, so is due in court soon.”

The officer also revealed that a woman who left three children, including two babies, in an unlocked car with the engine running has been fined almost £400 for the offence.

The incident happened in Catterick Village in January.

Insp Metcalfe said: “The woman ended up in court on September 3 and received a fine with costs of £398, as she never responded to the initial requests of a much lower offer of £30.”

He added: “Unfortunately, I caught the same female again in July and another court appearance is now being arranged, so I am hopeful she may eventually learn her lesson and park more responsibly.

“Pease continue to park safely and responsibly, especially outside our schools as checks will continue.”

Fines are just rules for poor people. Not saying I would, but if the only punishment is a fine, then I’ll weigh up the cost vs the time. If parking somewhere costs me £30 but it’d save me time, I’d rather just pay the fine… It might not be just, and it certainly isn’t right…. but some people value time.

  3. Do it like Finland, and make the fine depend on their daily disposable income. I think one guy got fined around £120,000.
