Expressways Reporting Heavy Congestion on 1st Day of Chuseok Holiday

Expressways in the country are reporting heavy congestion Saturday morning with movement of people heading to their hometowns on the first day of the five-day Chuseok holiday.

According to the Korea Expressway Corporation, the expected travel time from Seoul to the southeastern port city of Busan was seven hours and ten minutes as of 9 a.m., five hours and 50 minutes to the southwestern city of Gwangju, and three hours and 40 minutes to the cental city of Daejeon.

Travel time from those cities to the capital were forecast to be five hours from Busan, three hours and 20 minutes from Gwangju and one hour and 30 minutes from Daejeon.

The expressway operator projected some 420-thousand vehicles to depart from the capital region, and around 430-thousand vehicles to travel the opposition direction.

Congestion is expected to peak out between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m., before starting to ease between 8 and 9 p.m.
