Good. If you think that you’re feeling stretched these days you should try getting by on the standard rate.

  2. Maybe the working people should get these bonuses too since most jobs won’t pay them, let us all have a good Christmas!

  3. This business of bucketing all social welfare payments as the same is a nonsense. Leo’s way of getting power.

  4. >The two sets of payments are expected to cost €300m apiece.

Can anyone else think of a better way to spend €300m?

  5. How about one month off income tax for workers. I’ve nothing against social welfare recipients catching a break, and am glad we do this as a nation, but it would be nice to see heavily taxed workers win soemthing for once.

  6. Why do people think the working class deserve anything? Could raise taxes and still nothing would be done.

Nobody is going to give up money they don’t have to, governments are no different. Doesn’t make sense to go backward when it took so long for people to get here.

Slow gradual progress is the key and people are like goldfish they forget as soon as another story comes along.

Bring back Bertie, at least he shared it with everyone.

Let’s give the unemployed an extra bonus!! Won’t someone please think about the Unemployed people who are going around in gangs harassing homeless refugees, let’s make sure they get an extra few Bob.

More money for the unemployed, unvetted military aged males coming from poor countries. Great

Just up the social welfare payments to 350. The 230 is not livable for anybody it’s a fucking disgrace

  10. Besides all the comments above, there’s probably a mistake in the article: Jobseeker’s Benefit does not qualify for Christmas welfare bonuses, only “long term” welfare payments (like Jobseeker’s allowance) qualify.

Which is pretty absurd, yes. So unless the government explicitly adds JB’s to this bonus, people on JB’s won’t get it: [https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social-welfare/irish-social-welfare-system/christmas-bonus/](https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social-welfare/irish-social-welfare-system/christmas-bonus/)

I can’t imagine what’s the reasoning behind denying people on JB to get this bonus the same way all other welfare payments do. If anything, they need it more than long term welfare holders, as JB expires in either 6 or 9 months.
