Anytime I’ve been watching big football matches for the last 30 years, his voice has nearly always been in the background, I know he’s 74 and time has caught up with him, but it will be strange to no longer hear him.

Pity RTE wouldn’t keep him on till 2026 and let the World Cup be his swansong.

  2. George was the background voice to so many of our greatest sporting memories but he’s is in his mid 70’s, I know he loves what he does but I don’t like this reluctance to retire altogether. I’m sure there’s some great young commentators out there who would love to get that work at Premier Sports.

  3. The older I got, the more appreciated his commentary. Best of luck to him in his new role with Premier Sports.

  4. He’s great on Lyric and still the best stand in for Marty Whelan who seems to take a lot of days off.

  5. Another gold plated pensioner who would be happy to block the path of a younger less well off broadcasters. Get off the stage and let Darragh Maloney do more football…..oh wait.

  6. Could never stand him, jimmy magee too. The Larry gogans of sport commentary. In love with sound of their own voice.
