All schools owned or ran by religious orders should revert back to the state. Nobody but the state should be in control of education. Communion and confirmation should be done on personal time instead of wasting class time. My own secondary schools numbers have halved although the population is growing because people are moving away from religious schools. It’s a waste of resources.

  2. That’s an absolutely horrendous story and it’s not all that long ago given that he’s only in his 50s. It’s really important that people can talk about what happened. The silence, cover up and decades of gaslighting victims of abuses like these compounded the hurt and caused a lot of damage.

There are times I just wonder about Ireland though. How the hell did we ever accept it those violent conditions as being somehow acceptable ? We seemed to have an idea that schooling was about brutality and that’s the environment that these abuses occurred in and that abusers operated in plain sight.

There was something seriously wrong with this society and I think we need to start accepting that what went on here isn’t normal.

I know things have changed but there are generations of people who were in school before the mid 1980s who just seemed to get beaten up every day. Every relative of mine in school up until my generation seems to have horror stories. I’ve relatives with physical scars on their hands and backs from being hit with rulers, leathers, belts etc

Even when I was a kid the atmosphere in school was terrible.

It’s no wonder these abuses were so prevalent. There was a culture of extreme discipline, being constantly threatened, told to shut up, never challenge authority, never speak up for yourself or anyone else, accept injustices and unfair treatment etc etc

I mean we seemed to run schools like some kind of prison camps.

I think we are going to find a huge number of people coming forward. It very much seems like the tip of the iceberg.
