Japan’s government is set to launch a test run of next-generation solar panels in Fukushima Prefecture. The technology uses a type of cell called ‘perovskite’ that can be shaped to fit spaces where conventional solar panels cannot be installed.
The project is part of an initiative called “The Fukushima Plan for a New Energy Society.” The government is working on it with prefectural authorities.
Perovskite solar cells are lighter and more flexible than conventional silicon-based ones. This makes them suitable for use on walls and roofs that can only support small loads.
The government is promoting research and development into the cells, saying they are a promising source of renewable energy.
The test-run will involve solar panels being set up at three sites in Fukushima by next March. One of the locations is a sports facility, where the panels will be bent along the perimeter of a circular field.
