Hi everyone, I’m a Bulgarian citizen currently without health insurance in my home country. I’ve been accepted to Politechnika Warszawska and came across information that the university may help arrange health insurance for students who don’t have coverage in their home country. Has anyone had experience with this process? I’d appreciate any insights or help before I reach out to the university. I did a lot of researching but hearing real-life experiences would be amazing 😀

I saw this information on this reddit post;

If you are studying – but only if you lost right to healthcare in your country, the university will arrange your insurance. Remember, the university is obliged by law to get you insured if you don’t have any other source of insurance (not employed, not covered by your home country). Then it’s them who register you with ZUS but you have to actively apply for them to do that.

Also on this pacjent.gov.pl site;

(Translation) If you do not have your own health insurance title, and your parent or other authorized person cannot register you for health insurance, the university will do it. This happens, for example, when your parents or grandparents do not work and are not insured. But this will not happen automatically. The university will only insure you upon your application! You must go to the dean’s office yourself and submit it.

Also on this nfz.gov.pl site;

(Translation) If you do not have your own health insurance, and your parent or other authorized person cannot register you for health insurance, because, for example, your parents or grandparents do not work and are not insured, the university can do it. Importantly:

  • the university will not register you for insurance automatically after the start of the academic year

  • the university will insure you only upon your application, which you must submit to the dean’s office

  • if you start working during your studies, e.g. under an employment contract, the university must deregister you from the insurance and your employer will register you for it

  • when you stop working, your parent or college must re-enroll you for health insurance. Remember! This will not happen automatically.

Also on this document published in zus.pl site

If a parent or other authorized person cannot register a student for health insurance (e.g. because they do not work and are not insured), the university will do it. The student must inform the university about this – submit an application.

  1. I did it, there weren’t any major problems. I’d contact dziekanat first, it’s not a common twist but they should be able to forward your request to the university accountants who will tell you what forms to fill out.

  2. Man, Im sorry but you literally are asking about the same thing for the third time and I will also tell you for the second time: your uni will take care of your insurance. You will go to the department you will be pointed towards by the international affairs, fill some papaers and job done.
