The reason why a reset would be desirable from an American perspective is because it would recreate the historical vulnerability that China has always had along its northern flank (hence The Great Wall). This northern flank has always led to a continental defense necessity for China, which historically prevented it from building and maintaining the large navy its economy, industrial output, and population was always capable of producing.
The War in Ukraine has irrevocably closed this door forever in America. A reset is not politically, culturally, or diplomatically possible nor will it be in a distant future where Putin is not head of state. This means that China’s northern flank is forever inaccessible to the pressure a Russo-American rapprochement would create.
Ironically, this same northern flank *is* accessible to India.

The same mistake again. It was a mistake when Obama and Clinton had their reset button and laughed at Romney for saying Russia was a threat. So yeah, doing it yet again after much more Russian aggression is just pathetically weak. This whole seeming program has been diplomacy through weakness and capitulation driven by fear of escalation and has been a failure and not just in regards to Russia.Â
