The tenth day of Polish performances at the Paralympic Games is behind us.

First of all, I want to apologize for any mistakes in the plans for the next day – I should have trusted the intern from Polsat less. Because now when I enter swimming races, there are tons of errors (wrong distances and categories).

More medals, more gold, I’m writing this again, if I’m not mistaken again. As you can see, having a disability (whether congenital or "acquired") is not a problem in practicing sports at the highest level (in the appropriate category). And age is not a big problem either, because medals are won by teenagers (and even younger ones – if I remember correctly, a 13-year-old won a medal in swimming) and adults (and I am not talking about "calm" sports such as boccia, equestrianism or shooting – Barbara Bieganowska-Zając won gold in the 1500-meter race at the age of 43, and she also plans to start in Los Angeles, and Karolina Pęk’s rival in today’s para-table tennis final is 48, and she supposedly started her serious para-sport career at the age of 37). So if you know someone with a disability or have one yourself and are wondering what you can do in life, playing sports is a potential option.

Tomorrow, only two Poles will compete. While I don’t rule out a repeat of the Olympic Games, where we won a medal on the last day, looking at the data available for the competition, I wouldn’t count on increasing our medal haul. In connection with this, we can probably slowly sum up the performances of our representatives.

And of course, we will have the closing ceremony of the Paralympic Games and the farewell. Phrygian – mascots that were coolly received when they were announced, but who became everyone’s favorites.

Poles’ results from today (06.09.)

Road paracycling

Mass start race, men, category C1-3:

  • Zbigniew Maciejewski (C1):
    • result: 18. place.

If it was a time trial, the lower category competitors would be given a factor to the measured time so that the results would be "more fair" due to greater disability. Unfortunately, in the case of a mass start race, it is not used (because there is not much space), so competitors from lower classes are in a worse position from the start. In the "trivia" The Pole was the second C1 category competitor at the finish line.

Paraswimming

200 meters medley, men, category SM10:

  • Alan Ogorzalek:
    • qualifications: 4th place;
    • final: 6. place.

200 meters medley, women, category SM10:

  • Olivia Jablonska:
    • qualifications: 9. place.

Men’s 100m butterfly stroke category S8:

  • Michal Golus:
    • qualifications: 4th place;
    • final: 5. place.

200 meters freestyle, men, Category S3:

  • Krzysztof Lechniak:
    • qualifications: 5th place;
    • final: 7. place.

In the cases of Alan and Michal, both improved their qualifying times in the final races, but their rivals improved even more.

Para-table tennis

Women’s Singles Tournament category WS9:

  • Karolina Pęk 🥇:
    • semi-final: 3:0 (11:7, 11:8, 11:7), rival: Alexa Szvitacs (Hungary);
    • final: 3:2 (11:7, 2:11, 4:11, 13:11, 11:8), rival: Xiong Guiyan (China).

We end the para table tennis tournament with another gold medal and more emotions typical of sports played to 3 sets.

Para weightlifting

Men’s up to 61 kilograms category there are no categories here:

  • Laurence Latus:
    • result: 10. place.

Para-kayaking

Instead "Normal" canoes, here a va’a is used (a canoe with an additional mini-hull attached for stabilization, probably always on the rowing side).

200 meters kayaking, men, category KL3:

Semi-final (one heat only): 6 to final A. The rest out.

  • Mateusz Surwiłło:
    • semi-final: 6th place in the heat;
    • final A: 7. place.

200 meters canoe, women, VL3 category:

Semi-finals: 3 advance to final A. The rest advance to final B.

  • Monika Kukla:
    • semi-final: 3rd place in the race;
    • final A: 8. place.

Wheelchair fencing

Teams in team competitions consist of 3 players + a reserve (where, unlike in regular fencing, players can be changed more than once during the entire tournament), and one player MUST BE of category B, and during the duel one must play at least 3 duels being represented by a category B player (i.e. one cannot field someone from category B and replace him with someone from category A halfway through the duel).

Team epee, women, category AB:

  • Poland (Marta Fidrych (A), Kinga Dróżdż (A), Jadwiga Pacek (B):
    • quarterfinal: 35:45, rivals: Ukraine.

Men’s Team Epee category AB:

  • Poland (Michał Nalewajek (A), Dariusz Pender (A), Michał Dąbrowski (B)):
    • quarter-final: 45:34, rivals: Ukraine;
    • semi-final: 20:45, rivals: China;
    • match for 3rd place: 28:45, rivals: Great Britain.

Para athletics

I found an interesting PDF in English with a short description each category of classes in athletics.

Men’s shot put category F34:

  • Tomasz Paulinski:
    • final: 8. place.

Men’s 200-meter dash category T37:

  • Michal Kotkowski:
    • final: 6. place.

Shot put, women, category F40:

The F40 category is for "especially short people" (I am currently not entirely sure what exactly divides F40 from F41, which is also a category for people suffering from short stature. The difference "on the eye" is that the riders in the F41 category are bigger).

  • Renata Sliwinska 🥈:
    • final: 2. place.
