Azerbaijani mosques have a unique beauty that should be preserved. Our mosques are not like Ottoman mosques, and they shouldn’t be. The Ottomans based their architecture on Hagia Sophia and Byzantine architecture, and of course, their architecture is beautiful in its own way. But our mosque architecture is completely different and unique. Unlike countries within the Ottoman sphere of influence, we don’t focus on hagia sophia style domes in our mosque designs, and this is one of the aspects that make our mosques distinct. Unfortunately, in recent times, we’ve been seeing a shift toward dome architecture, which is quite saddening. Whether you believe in religion or not, like me, it doesn’t matter; we should preserve our own beautiful architecture.
