Taxis (and cars sometimes) are allowed in the bus lanes, also this is non-enforceable

It’s been raised in the Dáil on a few occasions, and the principal issues with rolling it out here seem to be:
1. Giving the NTA the power to prosecute specified offences. It seems the system is administratively unworkable if it all needs to be done by AGS as it would be at present.
2. More practically, many bus lanes are not 24/7 and taxis are also permitted. That makes it more difficult to have this kind of automated system as you have to also consider whether the bus lane is in fact a bus lane at the time of the transgression and have some mechanism of excluding taxis.
Not anything that’s beyond the wit of man to overcome, but trying to resolve those issues causes delay and it really just doesn’t seem to be a government priority.

I read something like this is coming soon – maybe not on buses but other mounted cameras.

of course it is possible. the camera could be on 24 x 7 and the backend systems could not process any detections outside of operating hours of the bus lane. Thats not difficult. They have to process the location anyway.
They would have to run the reg and registered taxis could be found at that stage.
The information could be passed to AGS who could enforce the law along with video evidence.
The reason its not done is that the people who vote for the governemnt are less likely to be on public transport. So its an own goal in the governents eyes.
Can i also add the bus mounted cameras wouldnt catch drivers driving down a deserted bus lane, which is one of the justifications put forth for driving in the bus lane. It would only penalise drivers who were in the bus lane whena bus was close by. IE interfering with the smooth flow of up to 80 people for their own attempt to save two minutes.

I love bus lanes. I love people’s Total lack of understanding how bus lanes work more, though. There’s a stretch of road going up through Phibsboro and into Finglas from the city centre(it’s changed to 24 hrs only busses/taxis now) where between something like midday and 1600, the lane was open to regular traffic. I used to save god knows how much time going down that lane coming home from college. You’d pull up to the red light, having undertaken maybe 20 cars waiting on a green to cross Griffith Avenue. Commuting Bliss.

Because public transport and making cycling, walking safer options is not really taken seriously in Ireland.

Tbh the biggest issue with bus lanes isn’t a handful of private cars illegally using them, but the fact that every single taxi is allowed to use them, which defeats the whole point of a bus lane (prioritising and speeding up bus travel to encourage the use of busses over less efficient cars which take up much more space per person).
To the best of my knowledge, bus lanes in most other countries don’t allow taxis, which makes bus lanes much more effective.
Building more segregated safe cycle lanes instead of having cyclists use bus lanes too would also improve efficiency and safety.
Mass surveillance with buses is maybe a part of the solution but not the main thing we should be focusing on imo
