I think this just highlights how much a lot of management isn’t needed if they spend so much time just watching you work.

Isn’t it because it is company’s equipment and company’s infrastructure so company has complete right to know what is going on? Think of it as part of an audit. They need to know what was used, how it was used, why it was used, who uses it.

Trust is an important part of management. If you cannot trust your employees to manage their time properly then either you made bad hiring choices or you cannot manage effectively. For every slacker you might have, the rest of your employees will know how to manage their workload with next to no help from management. Snooping just pushes the good employees out the door towards companies who exhibit a modicum of trust in grown adults.
