Surely this would fall down at the first legal challenge as this practically blocks any minority ethnicity from application?

I’m completely fine with this as long as the rules are applied equally: English homes for English speakers only.
No? Oh.

It’s only a small community council doing this but I’m not completely opposed to this. The Welsh language was absolutely decimated in the past and continues to be affected now by the glut of holiday homes making it difficult for locals to buy houses where they grew up and form proper Welsh speaking communities. Why should people who live in my country and in my small town not have to give a shit about speaking my language?

Pretty certain that would be illegal under EU law, depends if we retained it.

Do the majority of Welsh people actually speak Welsh?
I ask this as a Cornish person who doesn’t know a single Cornish speaker. I can’t imagine it’s 100%?

Yeah, sure that’s not gonna break any discrimination laws!

Sounds like some OAP council members need to let go, take a step back and go do something else.

Scottish, welsh and Irish love there casual racism directed at the English these days. Hypocrisy at its finest irony.

It’s a great idea. There is no shame in wanting to preserve local culture which here is underpinned by language. People moving into Penllyn (Llyn Peninsula) make little effort to learn Welsh despite it being the community language. Monolingual English speakers never understand the cultural identity that comes with bilingualism.

Insane what you can get away with if you direct it at the right targets

There’s always been a veiled two tier system here in Wales. You always see senior positions within the public sector etc. being occupied by welsh speakers with commonly, very Welsh names.
Most job applications have being a Welsh speaker as ‘desirable’ which does not make sense really as every person here can speak English.

Pure racism, worthy of Nazi Germany “Council wants new homes to be restricted to Aryans only”.

When people come up with these ‘ideas’, Northern Ireland would be where that future would lead you. Preserving culture, lessening the impact of minorities, call it what you like. It leads to flags being put on flag poles outside of new estates being built, they don’t want your kind, and if anything happens to you or your children? Well, you were warned.

Rage clickbait. Town councils have little sway ,no real power, and are the archaic cinder of parish councils, formed to give the illusion of participation after the majority of common land was stolen in 1801 enclosure act… town of 1000 people with 4 applications on waiting list

I think if you move somewhere you really should have to learn the local language

There is an area in the west of Ireland which has this stipulation in order to help preserve the Irish language.

It’s certainly quite amusing to see how quick some people are to defend blatant discrimination, so long as it’s against the right people.
“Community council called the influx of English speakers a ***’degenerative force’***”
Like good god, even the most loony Reform councillor would know rhetoric like this is going a *bit* too far.

Context because nobody reads: village of 1000 people. Basically next to nobody there needs more housing. The new development would likely only attract 2nd home buyers and if you’re lucky, a couple of people from the area. It’s not the worst thing that could happen but it’s not exactly fabulous.
Trying to prevent that along language lines is stupid.
