  1. What? But I thought they all had range rovers, a free six bedroom council house, the latest flagship phones, and went on overseas holidays multiple times a year. How can they not afford food? **/s**

  2. I want to know how many this policy has killed. The true effects of this policy implemented by the tories have definitely been hidden.

  3. Benefits have been effectively cut by 25% over the last decade, unsurprisingly this has been disastrous for the poorest in society.

I think we should have an insurance system like some European countries have, where it pays out a % of your salary from the job you lost.

Surviving on universal credit doesn’t seem possible. You’d have to move in with someone else for basically free once you’ve lost your savings

So a few things missing that I would want to know:
    – how many were in debt or in a poor financial situation prior to claiming as UC is never going to provide more money to people for that reason and will cause a shortfall (minimum cc payments etc)

    – what is considered essentials and I presume this is without the extra they provide for housing? I spend £500 month on essentials if I take out my mortgage and could cut that down by £100 if necessary.

    – What is the split between parents and single households? Is the issue from the ~£300 per child up to 2 children

The more I think about it the more questions I have and the worse this report is for answering anything…

  6. never ceases to amaze me how quickly the ‘we’re ignoring the poor white working class!!’ types pivot to, ‘oh, so now scumbags and idiots who can’t budget properly want more of my money?’ when faced with actual working class poverty

  7. Universal credit alone, even with the disability component, is simply not enough to live on, especially if people have rent to pay too.

  8. I used to get working tax credits as a single parent (living with mum and dad, cool!😎) every Friday. It was a nice boost between pay day. Now I get one payment a month and I’m not complaining at all, but it comes in mere days after payday. For the rest of the month I’m sitting on my hands.

We don’t know how they’re spending the money they receive do we. If they are generally being careful and still running out that’s very bad, if they’re wasting it on takeaways and crap well then that’s tough.

“i stress, i dont believe economic equality is possible; indeed some measure of inequality is essential for the spirit of envy and keeping up with the Joneses that is, like greed, a valuable spur to economic activity.” – Boris Johnson
