Why not shut them down as well? They’ve clearly abused the trust placed in them and should have their licenses revoked.

They will have saved more than thousands. They know the risks and can afford to take them. The consequences are not severe enough.

  3. I dislike this sloppy use of language. People are not “illegal” or “illegals”. The company employed their staff illegally. Small difference, big change in how we see people.

^(Edit: Ah, the same downvoters are out this morning I see. You guys are funny, I hope it helps you feel better, pushing buttons for imaginary internet points. LOL)

  4. Hardly a surprise. Most towns and villages with an Indian or Chinese takeaway have had some history with modern slavery. I can think of a fair few that have closed near me.

They shouldn’t just be fined, but forcibly closed and told they and associates cannot open new businesses of a similar nature. Keeping a close eye on the premises to ensure it’s not the same people would solve it, assuming councils want to prove they have teeth.

  5. Fines for this sort of thing should be 10% of global revenue per instance, and coupled with whistleblower rewards & protections.

  6. At those rates, it’s just a cost of doing business – and they’ll have saved more money than the fines ever cost them.
