  1. > These operations were put in place last year after it emerged 40 per cent of people seeking asylum in Ireland had either lost or destroyed their travel documents before arriving at immigration control.

I thought this was interesting. I hadn’t seen actual numbers on the amount of people that were destroying their passports.

Anyone that arrives in Ireland on a plane, and then shows up to immigration without a passport shouldn’t be allowed to enter the country.

  2. So it turns out there are reasonable steps we can take, to prevent people taking advantage of a system designed to help the most vulnerable.

  3. Id really to see these kinds of checks to be routine and automated. So they arent cut when things get busy or budgets get tight

  4. Had Garda waiting before we went enterer the airport checking that we had our passports on the past 2 flights I’ve been on

Always a certain amount of mental gymnastics about pity for those that magically somehow arrive without a passport in comments…

  6. I can’t read the article but… I fly regularly to different airports around the world back to Dublin and only once was there an impromptu passport check on leaving the plane. I think it was from London.

Wonder if there’s any difference at ferry ports.

We came through the Dublin ferry port in August and the garda at the passport control kiosk waved us through without checking the passports or even the number of people in the car compared to the number of passports we offered for inspection.

  8. Becoming a bit of a nuisance. Showing passports to folks exiting a plane(and it’s typically people crowding around in a tight corridor or boarding tunnel) to then have to show it again to passport control.

Passports are checked in the country of origin by the airline, why are these details relayed to immigration of the destination country? You also have to book with a name and that name must match your passport and boarding pass

  10. Traveled to Italy in 2021 and 2023 and both times we had a document check at the gate in Dublin. The latter trip was work, and the company I travelled who were over and back to Italy a bit said they always get checked. I’ve not seen if for any other flights yet.
