  1. Absolutely sick of the Tories and their austerity… Wait, oh, I mean good on Labour for making tough choices in regard to the budget deficit.

I remember when she used to market herself as a socialist. Anything for power though ay.

  3. Whenever they say ‘no plans’ that always means they absolutely intend to do it, they just don’t want to tell you yet

Getting rid of the single person 25% discount would royally piss me off. Theyd better not.

Local Councils are drowning. No one wants to pay more though. Of course they’ll whinge about the state of the roads etc but paying more? Out of the question.

Maybe council tax should be a combination of pay per person, and property size and value. There’s never going to be a truly fair system, but I don’t think a single person living in a 2 bed house should have to pay the same as their family of 5 neighbour with the same house, just with a loft conversion and extension.

  7. There isn’t much choice about raising council tax, the cost of temporary accoomodation and social care is ever grinding hire. Council tax needs reform with the wealthy paying a lot more.

  8. Great. Just fucking over single people harder. Modern life is already designed for double incomes, but I guess if you’re not in a relationship then you’re just rubbish.

Don’t raise council tax, replace it with a property tax or land tax.

Getting rid of the single person discount would be pretty wild. The stuff that is expensive for the council is generally people, particularly children and the elderly, not households.

  10. They do seem to be very “for the working family”. As a single person apparently I’m not worth their time. Thankfully I could accommodate a 25% rise, but there are a hell of a lot of people that wouldn’t be able to.

  11. Our labour council already cut in my area just before they came to power, my elderly mother (cancer patient) went from full coverage of council tax to now having to find an extra £90 per month from what little benefit she was recieving. Another cut would be devastating.

  12. Just do a fucking rebanding. Then draft a bill for council tax reform where we move to an annual land tax while you work out how much etc.

  13. I have supported Labour in this election, I was hoping to get rid of the rot. However, removing a discount not equating to a rise is the sort of technically correct gotcha my 11 year old tries to use to get out of tidying their room.

  14. You can imagine a pensioner living alone… Will pay £600 extra winter fuel and now an extra £300 for council, they really don’t care about people.

So yep, they are raising Council Tax then!
It’s always Joe Public that gets shafted in this country….

  16. what’s the point of having such an incredible majority if they’re still not willing to take the genuine tough decisions. (not just repeating tough decisions ad nauseam)

  17. They need a tax that only impacts the super rich.

99.9% of the population wouldn’t be impacted, and those that it did impact get to live in a nicer society that’s less likely to show up at their house and lynch them when the wheels all fall off the current system.

This would be a disaster, those who live alone already struggling and get fuck all support and all we ever hear about is families this families that.

  19. shredditorburnit on

I mean, why raise tax from people who can afford it when there’s people who can’t afford it to be plundered?

  20. LifeMasterpiece6475 on

A lot of single occupied houses are in fact pensioners, so they’ve got rid of the heating allowance now they want to squeeze the old folk even harder..
Almost like they’re trying to push them to either starve or freeze to death quicker, so they can both save on the NHS care cost and increase the amount of houses on the market.

  21. Original_Bad_3416 on

I wound be fucked if single CT discount doesn’t apply. I’m leaving on edge as it is, it’s scary.

Zero chance of getting a lodger (1 bed) and absolutely ZERO chance I’m being forced to have a partner.

  22. Puzzleheaded_Hat5235 on

We should have a property tax instead, but i can see the unintended consequences of old people with expensive homes not being able to afford it. I heard some countries have services whereby you can sell a home to X, on the condition the seller can remain for the remainder of their life.

However, this will create a situation whereby poor places still can be underfunded and wealthy areas councils will have excess cash. National govt gets the property tax £ but that gets distributed to councils based on population?

  23. They should wait until Feb 14 for this to come into effect, to really drive the whole “we are psychic vampires who feed on misery” thing home.

  24. So cut discounts basically hitting those that need it most. That should free up some homes as single people end up homeless

  25. Labour has already said that everyone has to do their part, it can’t just be rich people paying for all the peons to stay at home, it has to be fair, I’m glad this government has a backbone

  26. Feels like the are going to means test the discounts, means test everything by the look of it…

  27. If anything, rather than scrapping the discount for single people, they should be adding an additional rate for larger families.

It isn’t fair that a couple pay the same rate as a family of 5+

  28. I’m sorry but this sort of thing shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. I keep seeing people act as if they were hoodwinked by Labour but that’s just not true. Starmer and his neoliberal pals told you exactly what they were going to do, you just didn’t listen.

  29. Of course they have no plans. Central Government doesn’t see the level of Council Tax. Local councils do.

Might be a way to ease the housing crisis by forcing those in 1 person households to start sharing…. Just a thought.

Though I still fundamentally disagree with this

  31. Anyone actually read the article? They asked her if she will stick to not raising council taxes and she said “yes” she answered the only question asked of her, hardly refusing to comment on it.

Stop getting rage baited from headlines. Wait for the damn budget to come out
