Typhoon Shanshan downgraded, but heavy rain expected in wide areas of Japan Typhoon Shanshan was downgraded to a tropical depression on Sunday. But the Japan Meteorological Agency predicts heavy rainfall for wide areas of the country through Monday.

Shanshan’s extended periods of rainfall triggered landslides. In central Japan, more than 10 mudslides were reported in Atami City. Mud poured into a house, breaking windows.

In Ogaki City, Gifu Prefecture, floods covered roads and some parking lots in a residential area.

Residents had their cars towed away for repair. One resident said that he’s lived in the area for nearly 50 years, but this has never happened.

Atmospheric conditions remain unstable from northern through western Japan due to a rain front extending from the Sea of Japan.

In the 24 hours until Tuesday morning, rainfall could reach 120 millimeters in the Tohoku region and 80 millimeters in Hokkaido, Kanto-Koshin, Hokuriku and Tokai. Officials are warning people to remain on alert for mudslides and flooding.

The Tokaido Shinkansen and Sanyo Shinkansen linking Tokyo and Hakata, Fukuoka Prefecture, resumed services as usual on Monday after suspending some sections due to heavy rain.

Major air carriers Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways say they plan to operate as usual on Monday.
