They’re throwing a hissy fit because they want to means test a government payout, but labour look to be continuing, rather than reversing, the Tory welfare assessment reforms that fuck disabled people over so badly it’s been blamed for thousands of suicides and mentally ill people starving to death, and all I hear are fucking crickets

If you are unemployed or have kids they count every bean and oaps cheer at the thought you are treat like dirt by dwp. The moment someone sensibly points out we are handing the most wealthy demographic 400 quid a year regardless of need and we should stop they are crying poverty. Don’t worry they paid in 5 quid a month in 1972 so it’s all earned. You might not like it but it looks like labour are willing to take the tough decisions and tell entitled boomers no for once something they haven’t heard for decades. They must be seething.

My nan used to use her winter fuel payout as down payment for next year’s holiday yet complained my brother was on JSA ….

If you know someone in need of winter fuel payment, help them apply for pension credit and get their weekly money topped up to £218.15 and access to other benefits.

I’m glad Labour is resisting caving on this. State handouts should be means tested. Labour has a duty to the taxpayer.

I love how suddenly the Conservative Party are so upset about it, when they knew how unaffordable it was and were planning to cut it down anyway. Pensioners love welfare cuts, they’re just mad they’re finally being targeted. After all they are the biggest drain on our country and why young people are paying record taxes to keep them afloat.

  6. MPs get a heating allowance too on top of their salaries and expenses and subsidized bars and restaurants in Westminster.

Maybe some cuts there are due?

I haven’t had the heating on once since I returned to the UK a few years ago. It’s too expensive because I have to pay a massive rent to a Boomer landlord. It is past time that the greedy, selfish older generations who voted for the chaos the country is in had to take a taste of their own medicine. It’s beyond obscene that those who have houses and are spending decades in retirement get so much welfare.

People need to start sending messages of support for this measure to Reeves. I applaud it. Nothing else can be cut from the young.

  8. She’s cutting it to people rich wealthy enough not to need it to finance providing services to people who do need them.

It’s a highly progressive shift in policy.

Never thought The Observer would become the voice of the wealthy and reactionary. But there it is

  9. And Starmer has an approval rating of minus 16, worst of any incoming PM.

I hope these clowns don’t last a full term. Notice Carol Vordaman is now very quiet? She was very pro Labour pre election.

Be prepared for more and more headlines about “mounting pressure” and “growing calls”.

Nothing is changing but the media loves to use those terms when they are being ignored.

Just maybe the boomers and OAPs will learn some empathy. If their lead-addled brains can handle it that is.

We’ve now got “Rachel Thieves” and “Two Tier Kier” and although they’re stupid nicknames, that shit sticks.

They really are going to drive more voters to Reform at this rate. Being deliberately bland and boring and just getting the job done will only work if the job gets done well.
