Harris gives first interview as US Democratic presidential nominee Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris says she may consider appointing a Republican as a member of her administration if she wins the November election.

The incumbent vice president and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, spoke with CNN on Thursday. This was her first major television interview since she was officially nominated as the Democratic presidential candidate.

Harris said she thinks it is important to have people who have different views and different experiences when some of the most important decisions are being made. She added, “I think it would be to the benefit of the American public to have a member of my Cabinet who was a Republican.”

She said, “First and foremost, one of my highest priorities, is to do what we can to support and strengthen the middle class.” She said she will implement what she calls an “opportunity economy.”

Referring to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, the interviewer asked whether Harris would withhold some US weapons shipments to Israel.

While stressing that a ceasefire needs to be achieved, Harris said she is “unequivocal and unwavering” in her “commitment to Israel’s defense and its ability to defend itself, and that’s not going to change.”
