  1. Two interesting snippets:

    > It is instructive to note that during a documentary made in the 1980s about the Polaris submarine HMS Repulse, submariners and their families considered anything more than 8 weeks away to be a long patrol and tough on all involved.

    But somewhat more hopefully:

    > With HMS Vanguard now back from her DASO (shake down patrol) and following the abortive missile test in January, patrol length may reduce for a while at least as there are three boats in the rotation instead of two.

Unfortunately these boats, which were commissioned between 1993 and 1999, are getting a bit long in the tooth, and the [infrastructure problems](https://www.navylookout.com/trouble-in-the-docks-fixing-the-infrastructure-issues-impacting-royal-navy-submarine-availability/) for RN submarine maintenance have had an impact that’s lead to very long patrols for some boats lately. Of course her replacement [headed out](https://nitter.poast.org/SheilaLWeir/status/1827681070269055484#m) (in very stormy weather) a few days ago, ensuring that the UK’s independent deterrent remains unbroken.

  2. I bet the smell when they open that hatch is like a pair of armoured trousers after the Hundred Years’ War.

It looks like a whale after a bukkake session. I hope it gets a scrub down and a fresh lick of paint.

  4. I have a feeling one or more of these boats are padfooting around the Norwegian or Barents sea. It would not surprise me in the least.

  5. Its not the first time Vanguard has done 180+ day patrols…

Hell, Victorious has done 207 days in a single patrol.

The UK and French nuclear deterrants are all that stands between Russia and the fulfilment of its ambitions since the US went pacifist and isolationist under Biden.
