There’s a lot to be said about Nicosia that is interesting. This factoid however, was depressing – “Nicosia held the unenviable position of being the capital city with the least green spaces in Europe, with only three percent of the city covered with trees.”

The Pedieos River, which used to flow through the old city was diverted to outside of the walls due to recurrent flooding. The river is known as “bloody river” by TCs due to its historically deadly floods.

Nicosia has a beach
The name “Nicosia” (which comes from the middle French “Nicosie”) has two possible roots:
1) Corruption of the Greek “Λευκωσία”, possibly influenced by the extant town of Nicosia in Sicily (then ruled by the also Francophone Normans).
2) Corruption of the earlier name of the city “Καλλινίκησις/Καλλινίκηση” which referred to the initial medieval settlement close to ancient Ledrae.
The old municipality building above Eleftheria square used to be a cabaret and was supposed to be a “temporary” municipal building.
