  1. Is there nothing people won’t object to?

Also, they have concerns of the batteries ***leaking***?!? Absolutely clueless.

  2. Every single renewable power project should come with two proposals :

    1. The renewable project which is being proposed
    2. The pigshit fermentation plant which will be built if the first one isn’t

Local councillor shocked at the size of the batteries…

Did she think that the whole setup would just be charging to AA batteries? Fucking gobshites the lot of them.

  4. I don’t really have a problem with such objections being made.

I do have a problem with frivolous objections resulting in major delays. If similar such storage facilities exist elsewhere with no issues, and there’s nothing specific about this site that’d render it unsuitable (such as the mentioned flooding) then the objection should be quickly overruled.

This might be a blessing in disguise. We are currently in the midst of an energy storage revolution. Several new energy storage technologies are being developed and commercialized. If we wait another couple of years, we can either get cutting edge storage solutions or previous gen storage for a fraction of the current price.

Hopefully, in a couple of years we’ll also have this planning farce under control.

  6. It’s either hundreds of these batteries nationwide, or 4 nuclear reactors. The locals should pick one. Or else have no electricity.

Knockraha has been objecting for years against a substation. I’d bet they don’t want windmills either, or solar farms.

If Jesus came back and promised the Garden of Eden on Earth, Irish residents would object to it because it would decrease their house prices

I’m actually from Knockraha (well I moved there about 15 years ago so I will be forever a blow-in, as you do). I can give some insight as to the locals’ thoughts about this.

So there is currently an ESB substation about 1km from the village which the locals don’t mind. It’s necessary for the electricity of the local area and it’s JUST far enough away that you can’t hear the low hum that those stations give off. One or two houses are situated next to it so they’re not so lucky, but you can’t have everything.

This new proposed substation is many many times the size of the existing one. By all accounts it will break the horizon from the view of the village, which the current one does not. Also, the roads around here are HORRENDOUS. Planning some major operation up there would need 12 months of road works for the surrounding areas in advance. Even further, there are more remote areas locally that could be used for this major facility that would not affect as many people. A big part of the locals’ appeal is why not make it somewhere which doesn’t have as many people and/or services. There are loads of houses being built in Knockraha currently, it’s becoming the new commuter village. Some of the locals’ have pointed out sites that are only up the road a bit, but it would affect 80% less people etc etc. (And it would still be in “Knockraha”, they’re not just trying to pawn it off to the next parish)

Of course the local committee is going to be full of retired old folks, what do you expect. But I can tell you all of the young families and residents living in Knockraha also feel the same, sure nobody wants to have a big monstrous electricity station at their doorstep.

It’ll be interesting to see how this goes, these locals will fight tooth and nail for this. How much will people’s voices sway the big companies and politicians we shall see…

  10. I’d imagine its a bit late now considering a huge chunk of the N25 is being obstructed the last few weeks for works regards the project.

  11. A reminder that we are on eof the only countries allowing 3rd party appeals.

    Time to scrap it.

I can’t understand why they don’t just offer the locals half price electricity for life if you live within a certain distance.

If you’ve got this, or a wind farm, being built near you, obviously you’re going to object because there’s no upside only inconvenience and risk. Give a significant incentive and you’ll have local organisations springing up trying to entice these developments.

  13. The amount of nonsense information floating around on the web from so called “experts” is alarming

Car garages telling everyone not to buy electric because they are terrible, strangely enough because the garages won’t be able to service them and they have to go to main dealers. People lapping it up…..

No fix for stupidity unfortuneatly and every project at this stage in Ireland is rejected by the locals for some stupid reason

  14. Fuck. Them.

Enough. The ability of a tiny number of people to fuck everything up for the vast majority has to be ended.

Public transport, renewables, there’s a public good that apparently isn’t even in consideration by the planning authorities.

Some lad might loose his garden, so what ? Its one garden, the country’s needs come first.
