I just got back from Zakopane where I was filming some on the Goralenvolk, that weird Nazi attempt at “Aryanizing” Polish highlanders. I was surprised to see that many members of the main collaborator’s family were in the main cemetery, and the “Deputy Goralenfuhrer” Jozef Cukier had a nice headstone! There’s not many English-language sources, but does anyone have obscure photos of some of the leaders, or of anything related to it? I can’t find photos of Cukier, but any photos of Henryk Szatkowski, Witalis Wieder, the Goral SS Legion in training, or related ephemera would be appreciated!
I’m especially interested in photos of the proposed flag. It’s oddly popular in vexillology circles, but I don’t know if it was ever flown. Also interested in Wieder’s claim that traditional highland graves had swastikas on them. All I’ve found in my small American archives are old pre-war newspapers claiming the Gorals wore headdresses and acted like Plains Indian bandits! Very outdated info.
