  1. Softening us up for the defence increase in the Autumn budget. I do agree with this just wish we fought poverty and climate change like we do proxy wars but I guess they have no chance of displacing our elites so can carry on.

Best line of defence is attack. Authorize Ukraine to fire Storm Shadow into Russia.

  3. “Held the role under 3 PMs” might hold some weight, especially with how fast the Cons were replacing ministers, if it weren’t for the fact that could’ve been just 3 months under the last Con govt.

What does this actually mean, though? Russia is struggling to invade a comparatively weak country on its own border. Britain is a stronger country – a nuclear power – separated from Russia by water and by thousands of miles. The chances of Russia being able to invade Britain are effectively zero.

“Economy is fucked we need to make drastic cuts”

    Also

“Gonna be spending more money, that has miraculously appeared out of nowhere, to prevent a hypothetical Russian invasion”

I think it is rather apparent at this point that Putin couldn’t sort himself out of a paper bag.

  7. Thebritishdovah on

Suuuure, he is. He couldn’t even take Ukraine and fully exposed how weak his army is. That and if he declares war on the UK, the US and Europe may not tolerate it because of Russia’s antics.

Poland may decide to attack Russia out of defense at the same time.

I doubt Putin has any legit intentions of going after the UK.

  8. How can these two things be simultaneously true: a) russia are incapable of stopping an incursion on their own territory by a country which on paper is far outgunned by Russia b) Russia poses a military threat to the UK.

I’m not saying Russia aren’t a threat. maybe they are in terms of “hybrid” warfare but are they an actual military threat to any NATO country? Highly debatable.

BS. His army’s state is clear in Ukraine. Old, slow and weak. UK govt should stop lying and start to spend damn money on NHS,education etc. War monguls re rich enough.

He’s just looking for more money for his industry. Transport sec will say we need more rail money and education sec will say we need more schooling money. He’s just acting in self interest.

Happens to be correct in this case though

I’ve been hoping for years that he’d just nuke us and put us out of our collective misery

  12. More likely the forces are going to be defunded under the new government cuts and this guy who’s been interviewed is trying to drum up support for the army to force the hand of politicians during the next budget. Which at the time of posting is due in the next few weeks .One of these stories rolls out every few years about how we are under prepared for the next invasion.

  13. MoleDunker-343 on

The irony, considering how long we’ve been stoking the flames with NATO and expanding Eastwards.

  14. FunctionOld4351 on

    Putin is a big Jobbie.

I challenge him to a one on one bare chested fight on horseback. Let me teach him a valuable lesson. If Saddam was still with us he would call it “the mother of all battles”

  15. Serious-Counter9624 on

NATO should take control of terrorist states such as Russia for the sake of world security.

  16. ChoirBoyComparedToMe on

They can’t project power across their own border. How are they going to project it across the channel when even the nazis couldn’t do it at the height of their power?

  17. I mean they can’t even defend their own borders against the country they were meant to invade and claim in three days.

    I’d say we’re good.

Obviously defense spending needs to increase. But like cmon.

  18. Working-Lifeguard587 on

Ridiculous clickbait title. What exactly are they going to do when they get here? Force us to buy cheap gas from them. I’m all for cheaper energy bills. Bring it on.

Don’t understand all the scaremongering when Russia can’t defeat Ukraine how are coming for great Britain

  20. The_All_Seeing_Pi on

What a load of Rubbish. Next they’ll be telling me he’s hiding under my bed. I guess we better send more money to defence contractors though I’m not sure who ultimately benefits from that but I’m guessing it won’t be far from some MPs.

  21. OddTechnician2803 on

Maybe if we didn’t have a friend of Russia as PM for 6 years in which he gutted our military, leaving us with less troops, planes and no aircraft carriers, this guy wouldn’t have had to say this.

  22. JimJonesdrinkkoolaid on

This shit is tedious. If Putin attacks a NATO country by all means then say he’s coming for us. Until then though it’s pure conjecture.

  23. “Ben Wallace, who was Defence Secretary under three Tory Prime Ministers, said the UK is in Vladimir Putin’s ‘crosshairs’ and he could turn his war machine on us”

Absolute nonsense. Wallace is simply attempting to put political pressure on the current government to increase defence spending.

  24. Absolutely ludicrous. If anything kicked off between NATO and Russia, if there was no nuclear stuff involved, NATO would crush Russia in a week and be raising a NATO flag above the Kremlin.

  25. Something that slips through the gaps.

Russia, when they invaded Ukraine, had a normalised economy. Since then, they have switched to a war economy while we continue normally. Gives them a pretty good headstart. It takes years to get up and running and longer to be efficient with it.

While Putin is unlikely to ever get near the UK, we will be required under NATO to get involved if or when that time comes.

I’m not saying we should switch, but there are a few things we should urgently fix, like recruitment (what is, by all accounts, a shit show. Captia needs throwing in the bin), wages, readiness, kit, etc.

  26. Reminder: (1) Nayirah Testimony (2) Weapons of Mass Destruction

Russia is not UK’s enemy. Our own politicians are UK’s enemies

  27. Not sure how he is going to do that, maybe a swift flight through Europe, not likely. Missiles fired, not likely. Flying fighters or bombers across Europe, not likely. Sanctions with the help from China, maybe.

  28. Skitteringscamper on

Prepare yourselves. I don’t give a flying fuck what happens. Nobody could run this nation into the dirt faster than our own gov.

Why should us working clots care who our taxes go to? Fuck off

  29. Russia ia already in the UK, aside from the obvious poisonning there have been a couple of large fires in London and else where that had Russian agent involvement. iwont even mention how far entrenched they were with the previoous Conservative government, suffice to say this article is way behind the times.

I’m interested to see the diverse range of opinions from all of the military experts on Reddit in this comments section

  31. coffeewalnut05 on

The only people who have been coming for us were the Tories in the last 14 years who systematically weakened our army, NHS, universities, pursued a hard Brexit, lied about staying in Erasmus, and did nothing as the cost of living and rent shot up.

Just stop already. The warmongering and fearmongering is tiring. If these elites feel like the Russian threat is so urgent to the UK, by all means, resign from your cushy jobs and go fight in Ukraine. Practise what you preach.

  32. StartingLineLee on

Do people actually fall for this cold war hangover nonsense? If Russia can’t even handle Ukraine how will they handle the UK and it’s allies? The US has bases here, they’ll defend them to the hilt.
