>**Labour will not raise taxes on working people**
Labour will not increase income tax, national insurance or VAT. Unlike the Tories, we have been clear about how we will pay for our first steps in government: by making the tax system fairer.
Let’s see if they keep their promise (article from June 2024).

The “those who made the mess” bit is interesting, is he going to implement a tax that is only applicable to Tory MPs and ex-MPs, because they are the ones responsible for what we are seeing in this country?

Tbh I appreciate the honesty here.
Possibly the thing I hated most about the previous government (and the list of things I hated is loonnggg) was that there seemed to be a total denial about how bad the state of the country was in, and constantly proposing big, simple solutions to any problems they did acknowledge (“sending people to Rwanda will stop the boats, no problem!” etc) that never actually went anywhere or solved anything.
The country is in a really bad state at the moment and anyone who thinks fixing it will be easy and painless is either being ignorant or dishonest.

Just a reminder that the “broadest shoulders” i.e. the top 10% of taxpayers already pay 60% of all income tax, in one of the most punitive (or progressive depending on your view) systems in Europe.
European countries typically have more tax revenue as a % of income but this is generated by higher average tax rates across the board.

Entirely predictable; they’re singing from the Cameron/Osbourne hymn sheet and it’s like 2010 all over again – we know the score: the previous regime maxed out the “national credit card” so now New Labour Mk II have to make the “tough decisions” required to “grow the economy”, which translates to public service cuts for us, and tax breaks for the wealthy and the corporate elite.
If you voted for these neoliberal ghouls in order to “get the Tories out” then I hope you are fucking pleased with yourself.

Hi Keith, how’s about tackling the off-shoring of profits and wealth?
Nah, though not :/

All the wealth in the UK is either in property or pensions.
Your primary house is tax exempt when selling and your pension also has tax advantages.
If he’s not going after VAT or Income tax. Then he’s going for property or pensions.
Capital gains or Corporation tax won’t bank the UK much money.
He could go for inheritance tax though.
Either way the UK government is spending billions a month it does not have and now owes something like 2 or 3 trillion. If it was a person or company it would of gone bankrupt back in world war 2.

I’m glad they’re being honest now, but I really don’t appreciate them pretending this wasn’t coming around election time. Because let’s be real, we all knew it was, and even if it’s obvious this is the product of 14 years of Tory rule, blatantly lying to the faces of the general public is a bit shit.

I’m not really sure how sticking with the freezing of income tax thresholds until 2028 fits in with the government’s pledge not to increase taxes on working people.
Surely by definition that is a tax increase on millions as pay goes up over the next 4 years?
borangefpl on
The only reason to caveat “will not increase income taxes” with “on working people” seems to be that they will increase the additional rate band and say that additional rate taxpayers are not “working people” (notwithstanding that you can be an additional rate taxpayer through salary alone, i.e., working). Otherwise there is just no need for the caveat. Given the £100k tax trap and how penal the combination of the additional rate band + NICS + apprenticeship levy already are, this just feels incredibly unfair. And its all because the UK, like most other developed nations, is unwilling to even attempt to tax actual wealth (capital) effectively.

Why is he lying about it being worse than they imagined? We knew about the enormous hole in the budget months before the election. I cant wait for benefits to be cut but there to be no tax increases for the richest in our society.

I have no real issue with tax rises as such. It depends on what taxes rise and by how much but if the government can reduce borrowing and yet improve the services provided then a tax rise is acceptable.

My bingo card has the following on it.
NI back to the old rate prior to the two cuts.
Income tax threshold freeze is extended further into the future e.g. 2034.
Medium chance of CGT having various thresholds introduced i.e. a 20%, 40% bands.
Low probability of Council tax increase caps bring removed.
The 40% threshold is lowered to catch more people
Maybe a new 50% tax band
Basic rate tax up by 1 or 2%.

I’m not against raising taxes on the basis that the wealthy are appropriately taxed and the money goes directly into our services.
If taxes go up and we see corruption involved then they are going to end up with riots on the streets.

I’m all for there being a concept of a social contract between an elected representative/party and the electorate, if the pledges and policies they campaigned on that got them elected isn’t adhered to, they have forfeited their right to represent the people that elected them.
That is why we see continually lower turn outs at election time because people know that no matter what they vote for, it won’t come to fruition and no vote is the same as any vote.
Representation needs have accountability, not in 4/5 years, at the time.
