This is a tricky one, on paper E scooters are the perfect form of personal transport and when combined with public transport, could remove the need for Cars entirely.
But it’s bad behaviour from some riders that could see them banned entirely which would be a shame.

You see small kids on these things too. I think it should require license and proper training. However it should only be used in areas with good infrastructure for it.Â

Things like this get reported on because they’re new, and rare. You don’t hear much about the 5 people killed on the roads in motor collisions every day.

Can’t wait for the non existent outrage when cyclists and e scooter riders are hit by cars when they’re forced to ride in the road.

I never understood why it was fine for them to be allowed when there were private companies with cronyism based contracts to serve certain regions paying for the license, but not fine when they were privately owned. It didn’t really solve any of the issues presented by the use of the e-scooters. They should’ve just regulated the standards for the ones that were being used in public.
The issues that wouldnt have solved is:
– consultancy fees on the introduction of the private licenses paid to their friends in the big 4
– fees received by the private companies / favours received by selecting the companies of their Tory friends to provide the e scooter service
– ability to track, real time and historically, any scooter’s location and the renter of that scooter’s identity
I wouldn’t be surprised if this sort of setup gets introduced for e bikes citing very much rare occurrences of crime and accidents involving e-bikes.
