I’ve seen those guys just plow their horses through the plastic barriers on pedestrianised streets in Temple Bar. Really obnoxious way to treat the city and can’t be nice for the horses either.

For all we know, the horse was hit by a car. We don’t have any context for this picture.
Edit: I refuse to open twitter links, so maybe there is some context there.

Doesn’t surprise me animal cruelty is rampant in Ireland.

Horrible to see, but it could be natural (as in old age, or some medical emergency), or it could be something else, as others have said. Unless you’ve had horses, it’s hard to look at.

I thought they took good care of their horses. This isn’t the same as sulky racing and it’s possible the horse just became unwell. It can happen to any animal no matter how well cared for. Either way though, it’s upsetting to see.

The government only cares about numbers not the public, we need way more reports to the ISPCA if we want to expect anything to change.

I don’t know why people are bringing out the “oh but it could be old age or illness” argument. We don’t see owned dogs dying on pavements in our cities. That animal is fully the responsibility of its owner. I would expect any working animal to be entitled to live out its final days either in retirement, or put to sleep.

This treatment of horses is not exclusive to any ethnic groups in Ireland. My sister has worked with horses in varying degrees and I’ve helped her on the yard a fair bit too.
The horses are treated inhumanely from top to bottom. Jockeys are arseholes to them, gardaí are just as bad as are many yard workers and independent horse owners. Remember Seamus Finnigan in Harry Potter? His actor, Devon Murray, is a horserider and my sister has met him a bunch of times. He’s a fucking gowl to all his horses and staff. Abusive, bigoted, you name it. Fella’s a prick.
People love betting on horses and going to racecourses like Tattersalls, the RDS and Leopardstown to dress all fancy and look cultured. But it’s complicit in a culture rife with animal cruelty, abuse (towards animals and staff), huge money thrown around and next to zero regulation. Same can be said for greyhound racing. If people really cared about making a positive difference these events would be boycotted in favour of improving conditions for the animals, and as much as you might hear of some positive change in the news cycle that’s rarely what happens in reality. Nothing changes, go find the numerous articles showing how horses collapse, die of exhaustion from being worked to the bone or are abused by any of the big names or small ones.
My sister still goes and competes in local shows, sometimes spectating at the bigger ones. But she has said time and again that people in Ireland, Germany and France to name a few countries are pieces of shit to the animals and don’t care if it has lasting effects. She owns her own horse named Barbara and she’s under constant pressure to train the horse harder and harder by the yard owner so she can either sell it to some gobshite to abuse for money or ride the horse and win competitions herself. In actuality, I get the impression that she just has Barbara so others can’t have her and mistreat her. Even our parents want her to sell the horse for a few bob so she can have more money for a house. Meanwhile Barbara lives a pretty nice life compared to many other horses. I wish things could be better and people had more humanity. I always laugh when people say they’re vegan but then go bet in the bookies, like fuck off you don’t care about animals you care about looking cool.

There are horses kept in the city centre by people who aren’t travellers.
Here’s a video of a Norwegian girl that made friends with some of them.
I work near the Guinness store house and see how they treat these animals every way. It’s genuinely shocking. The council perform welfare check every few months and have seized animals but it doesn’t seem to deter the operators.

its sad to see. lets hope for better care for the horses and push for change if they’re mistreated…

Ban them. It’s ludicrous in this day and age this cruelty is tolerated. Plus all the horseshit they leave all over the streets.

Can’t believe you’re going to make all the mods be called in on a Sunday to lock the discussion of cruelty to animals in the comments.
“Ya can’t leave that lyin there”
“It’s a horse…….. not a lion”.
Tyres are rubber, you are glue

What happened next, any info. It’s only half a story.
Any evidence that this is anything other than a natural occurring death?
There’s been people calling for these tourist horse carriages to be banned for years. The horses aren’t being taken care of.
Ahhh poor thing, lovely beasts.
Selkies are scum of the earth. Can’t believe this is still tolerated in this day and age
Horrible to see I wish we didn’t allow those horses through the city.
Let’s see how long this discussion takes to get locked.
Once again the government, department of agriculture and Gardai have shown how little fucks they give for animals in this country.
It’s so sad.
DCC immediately erected a new sign at the scene
