>The prime minister will make the extraordinary claim that those who took part in recent riots were doing so because they knew society had been left broken and that there were not enough prison places.
>“Not having enough prison spaces is about as fundamental a failure as you can get,”he will say.
>“Those people throwing rocks, torching cars, making threats – they didn’t just know the system was broken. They were betting on it. They were gaming it. They saw the cracks in our society after 14 years of populism and failure – and they exploited them. That’s what we have inherited.”

>The prime minister will argue that sacrifices now are the only way to get long-term benefits for the whole of society: “I won’t shy away from making unpopular decisions now if it’s the right thing for the country in the long term.”
I guess if you intend to continue unpopular Tory policies like not taking debt, keeping the two-child benefit cap, rising social housing rent to above inflation, then I guess you are indeed making unpopular decisions.

What about all the labour controlled bankrupt councils that have left people with 20% council tax hikes….suppose they were inherited too.

The real problem here is that there’s no sign of a “labour plan”. They got away with campaigning on “not being the Tories” and even the day before the election couldn’t answer basic policy questions on their approach to benefits. Today it’s simply *let’s try and stabilise the Tory mess* as a day 1 approach.
Unfortunately labour only have 4 or 5 years not only to “fix the Tory mess” but also to start making serious head roads into the countries many problems.
As an example I don’t see any sign of a housing policy that will reduce prices, or even stem the current rate of house price inflation. As someone who is almost 50 *This current labour government is my last chance* yet I genuinely don’t believe they are even trying to reduce house prices.

Bullshit
Not one person rioting gave that level of thought to the possible consequences. These are, on evidence, people who can’t even form simple sentences or maintain their adult teeth.
The Tories were quick to erect a straw man when they needed one, and here’s labours straw man “*rioters felt emboldened to riot mainly because the could forsee that the courts would struggle to deal with the sheer numbers of people rioting, and would let people out early as a consequence.”* Utter nonsense.

So his ‘costed’ plans were a lie then? He’s now saying he didn’t have access to figures to make these plans.
Secondly, they dished out a blanket public sector pay rise without any sort of negotiating, productivity improvement plans, no strike deals etc. its just basic competence to get something back. It was a doubly stupid thing to do if they hadn’t checked finances at that point.

The absolute state of this fraudster and his government.
Let’s release 5,000 prisoners early so we can jail people who carry the England flag and shout things at night for 2 years.

More managed decline and austerity rather than transformative change.

Tough times for who? And what constitutes tough?
Cos yeah, some affluent prick having to make do with only one cruise this year instead of the usual two may talk about tough times, but it ain’t the same as some poor bastard freezing their bollocks off because they can’t afford to put the heating on.
