Well yes, we knew this when they backtracked on ending zero hour contracts.
Hopefully Labour sees what this thingtank are saying and take their advice on board. At the moment the employment bill is an improvement but not enough
The Labour Party has had 14 years to think about how to change the country. They’ve approved a few wind and solar farms, locked up some white people, given some folks a big pay rise and now seem to have run out of steam
You could remove ‘to improve UK workers’ rights’ from this headline and it would still be just as accurate.
Can someone confirm this is a top think tank? I can’t say I’ve heard of them.
>Among plans not included in Labour’s proposals, raising statutory sick pay to levels comparable with other similar nations and shortening the working week to 32 hours with no loss of pay were the most popular ideas.
Statutory sick pay is a joke. £116 a week. You get more on universal credit. You are better off quitting your job and signing on.
As for the 32hr week. I wish they did it at my place. The half day we do on Friday is the most pointless shift imaginable (all weekly orders have to be finished by the end of Thursday anyway) so it’s just finding shit to do to keep yourself busy. I guarantee we would be more refreshed and productive Monday morning if they just gave us the day off every week.
The Labour government has to offer some totemic policies for it’s support base; hence the VAT on public schools, the closing of the Bibby accommodation barge for migrants (assume it will be fine for oil workers etc?) and the banning of zero hours contracts. Mostly useless posturing but it will make a few people think that they are having an impact.
