Shanshan expected to develop into very strong typhoon on Tuesday Typhoon Shanshan is expected to develop into a very strong typhoon on Tuesday and approach western to eastern Japan without losing most of its power.

The Japan Meteorological Agency says that as of 3 a.m. on Sunday, Shanshan was moving north-northwest over waters near the Ogasawara Islands.

It has a central atmospheric pressure of 980 hectopascals, and was packing maximum sustained winds of 126 kilometers per hour near its center, with peak gusts of 180 kilometers per hour.

Weather officials say that western through eastern Japan could experience severe weather, with rain and winds intensifying on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Rough weather may also affect northern Japan on Wednesday and Thursday.

Heavy rain could precede the typhoon, which may impact transportation and cause service suspensions.
