Weather officials are forecasting localized thunderstorms in northern parts of Japan on Tuesday.
Previous rainfalls have loosened the ground and damaged river embankments in areas of Yamagata and Akita prefectures in Tohoku, raising the risk of disaster even if only a small amount of rain falls.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said warm humid air flowing into the seasonal rain front in northern Japan has caused rain clouds to develop in the Hokuriku region.
Toyama Prefecture’s Kamiichi Town was hit by 36 millimeters of torrential rain in the hour until 11 a.m.
Localized rain clouds have also developed alongside mountainous areas of the Tohoku region and Niigata Prefecture.
Torrential thunderstorms are forecast until Tuesday night in the Hokuriku region as well as in Niigata, Yamagata and Akita prefectures.
In the 24 hours until Wednesday morning, up to 100 millimeters of rainfall is forecast for Hokuriku, 80 millimeters for Niigata and 60 millimeters for Tohoku.
Residents in affected areas are advised to be on the alert for landslides, floods, lightning, gusts and hail.
