Sabiha Gökçen was Turkey’s first female fighter pilot and is considered one of the world’s first female fighter pilots. She was born in Bursa in 1913 and adopted by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in 1925. With Atatürk’s encouragement, she became interested in aviation and in 1935, she joined the Türkkuşu Civil Aviation School affiliated with the Turkish Aeronautical Association and received training there. In 1937, she actively participated in the Dersim Operation and was recognized as a military pilot. Sabiha Gökçen is also a figure who sets an example for modern Turkish women.
