Why do all politicians suddenly care about things which get cars off the road, make driving more expensive or inconvenient?

Could it be that global resources have a peak of production, and everything needs to be greatly reset?

Stuff like this really should be a local decision. Whatever they do though the conspiracy theorists will start screaming about the WEF as usual.

If they can set these limits, any profits from speeding fines shouldn’t go to the council.
So they can set them for safety but can’t do it as a way to make money .

30 is a reasonable speed through urban areas.

I’m not slowing down because Doris is unwilling to get her cataract sorted and causes more accidents.

I’m sick of this nanny state class detention approach to running society.

We all know there’s not enough Police to enforce this anyway.

Does Labour have any plans which aren’t just whacking up my taxes, cutting my services and making my commute to work slower and more miserable to appease Mumsnet?

Shame as local councils are hardly renowned for making decisions that are sensible. Most could not run a bath.

Live In Cardiff. In the city centre the speed limit change has had zero impact due to the volume of traffic. You’re lucky to get anywhere near 20 most days.

However further North it’s been nothing but a failure in Wales imo. Areas which need to be 20 (I.e outside of schools and town centres) were already 20. I’ve noticed an increase of people dawdling on 40 and 60 mph roads (maybe due to uncertainty?) and people generally ignore the 20 speed limit anyway.

Seems reasonable, 20 is plenty in certain areas such as residential roads. It would usually only ever be the last few hundred meters > a mile of a journey

This will be popular with Reddit Labour supporters.

Most are either young people living in London who don’t need a car, or stay at home mums who are perma-online and only ever drive their car at 10.30am to visit their gal pals in town with baby Jerico.

Like all authoritarian they’re always happy to make life harder for “other people” who live lifestyles they disagree with.

Maybe instead of these piecemeal gestures we should confront the real problem head on. Ban cars. Yes it will annoy lots of people, and cause no end of problems for some. But people will adapt and in a few years the changes will be such that no one will want to go back. Our cities will be quieter and cleaner, people will be thinner and fitter, and wealthier without forking out for petrol etc.

It’s the change we all know we need but no one wants to start. But sometimes you just need to rip off the plaster.

    >”We’re certainly not shying away from the target of getting 50% short journeys walking and cycling and that will have to be delivered by local authorities, so anybody who wants to do that work, they’ll have the Department for Transport’s full backing,” she said.

No mention in the article itself but looking online its there aiming for everything under 5 miles to be 50% walked or cycled. Thats uh…..an interesting target for anyone outside a major city/hub

Just pick the plate up and shove it all fucking in the scraping of the plate 😖

If there was a local referendum on this, there would be widespread support for 30mph being the norm and 20mph reserved for narrow residential roads where 30 is impractical.

  13. This is so dumb. They have no interest in fixing real problems in this country. Yet 30 mile an hour is being questioned😂 it’s 20 in school areas now. Theres nothing wrong with the speed limits ffs.

This is to “protect the children” right so why not go a step further and blanket ban dropping kids off to school in the car?

Think about it. Most young people on the streets in the morning are walking to school, and the traffic most likely to run them down is people doing the school rat tun.

    Ban it.

Force those yum mums and their tadpoles out of their child mowing SUVs and onto the bus. There’s plenty of public transport options so I’m told, and parents should be setting an example to children and getting them into the habit of never taking the car.

It will be self policing too. Kids can’t keep a secret to save their life, and other Mums take exceptional glee in dobbing in rule breakers.

Win win win. Crack on Labour.

I think on its right that it’s a local decision. On a personal note I find it very hard to drive at 20 and I think it makes me more dangerous. I’m constantly having to look at the dash instead of the road.

  16. Aromatic_Bug_6759 on

Are we really going to adhere to it tho. I know so many of the general public who barely follow the “stay in your lane” rule let alone not speed.

  17. Right-Program-9346 on

That’s suits me as I’m right on a main road. I live next to a crossing with a slow down sign that comes on when people are going too fast and it lights up almost constantly. Never mind the swathes of idiots on dirt bikes and loud exhaust cars doing 60 in a 30.

Wales 20mph limit is the media’s new “let’s blame the EU” mantra.

Bored to death of it now, it’s in, it’s here to stay, get with the program, it causes you zero fucking inconvenience tbh.
