  1. It takes about 30 minutes a year to fill out a self assessment. What else are these people doing with their time? They should be fined for late payment like the rest of us if they don’t bother.

In summary, it is likely that some people who get the state pension will end up above the income tax threshold over the next few years. The issue is you can’t collect PAYE tax on the state pension so HMRC would have to write to everyone and collect the money manually. HMRC have explained that the in most cases the amount of money owed will be less than it would cost HMRC to collect it, so they aren’t going to bother.

Nothing new at all. If you owe less than £50 total you’re not gonna get chased up on it.

And nothing is “written off”. It still goes to record and when you owe more than £50 you’ll still he asked to lay it.

A few years back they pursued me relentlessly for 30p. I didn’t bother calling them as it wasn’t worth my time or theirs, and there was £10 on my account with them from the previous year.

Eventually after half a dozen increasingly threatening letters, the last one almost all in red ink, they sent me another, “we’ve deducted the amount owing from your account balance.”

Says a lot about the telegraph that 77% of its readers thing that triple lock is a good idea. This reads like a very non-issue being blown out of proportion to make Labour seem incompetent financially. If I’m wrong please correct me but that’s what I got from the article

Yes! Suck on that kiddos who were cheering about making us oldies miserable with taxes. We win again.
