Here’s a video of a man speaking Amish.

It occurred to me today that since the Amish originated in Switzerland, it’s entirely possible that what Americans call “Pennsylvania Dutch” is actually a Swiss dialect. I do not live on the German side, so I don’t know anyone to ask this question besides Swiss Reddit.

Soooooo… Can you understand him? I assume his accent is Americanized. But are the words familiar?

  1. There are some passages I can understand like “it is really cold outside”, but i do not understand enough to get the context of anything.

  2. I understand short phrases here and there but most is incomprehensible to me. Phonetically it reminds me more of Danish than Swiss German.

But I guess all that applies to St. Gallen as well.

  3. I lived in Indiana for a while where they have a lot of Amish. You can understand them ok-ish. But this guy mumbles too much.
