At 10:30pm last Saturday, Donna and her partner, Joe, had finished feeding Precious when she became unresponsive. The baby couldn’t breathe for almost two minutes forcing Donna to panic. Fearing the worst, she phoned the guards.
“She was lifeless and floppy in my arms. She was grey. Her tongue was hanging out of her mouth. We thought she was dead. I rang anyone I could think of for help,” Donna said.
As Abbeyfeale Garda Station had closed for the evening, Donna decided to take a gamble on the closest station between her and Tralee and called Listowel Garda Station for assistance.
The guards managed to get Precious to University Hospital Kerry (UHK) in 10 minutes, a journey that would have taken well over 40 minutes had Donna and Joe tried making it on their own. Garda Cushen and Garda Hill also helped keep the tension at bay by talking to the parents during the short journey.
“They even cracked a few jokes and put us at ease. They stayed with me in the hospital until they knew Precious was being looked after and in resuscitation. The guards can sometimes get negative media attention, but I truly believe God sent them to save Precious. They were amazing to me and I can’t thank them enough,” Donna said.

The Irish media is amazing at cheerleading the complete failures in this country.
>“By the time an ambulance would have got to me from Tralee, I genuinely don’t think she would have been alive. It was a miracle of God that I phoned those guards. They are the only reason she is alive today,” Donna said.
Fair play to the guards, but if journalists are supposed to hold power to account the story should be about the dreadful state of the ambulance service.
