I contacted a music school to start drums lessons and they sent me back a contract.

It’s €55 per class, 4 classes per month.

The only two ways of paying it are with a lump sum (single payment of €1440 upfront) or with monthly payments of €249.27 for 6 months.

That’s almost 7% interest rate on the installments.

I found it fucking weird that these are the only two options. Normally there’s a chance to simply pay it monthly, without any extra interest. I have never seen a contract for an activity like this only giving these two options.

Is this normal?

  1. That is a mistake in their contract. Tell them to fix it.

They have to specify what you have to pay and how they are calculating it.

If you have 4 lessons with 55€ the sum is 220€ per month.

I would not sign it they way it is right now

  2. Also tell them to fix the amount for monthly payment. If they want to use a factoring company they have to pay for it.

It’s none of your concern how they are handling their billing.
They have to pay for this themselves.

    This contract seems shady.

  3. 2024 has 53 weeks, rather than 52.

    53*55/12≈243€ per month.

Since you only have 6 months though they should count the number of lessons and then bill you exactly that, not what a full year would be broken down on a monthly rate.

The contract or an attachment to the contract should be an itemized “bill” containing the exact amount of lessons you’ll receive.
