Torrential rain may hit some parts of Japan on Monday Sweltering heat in western and eastern Japan has been continuing on Monday. Atmospheric conditions are expected to become very unstable during the day in the region.

The Japan Meteorological Agency says temperatures are forecast to reach 36 degrees Celsius in the city of Matsue in Shimane Prefecture and the city of Kofu in Yamanashi Prefecture, as well as the cities of Nagoya and Yamagata.

A daytime high of 35 degrees is also expected for the cities of Fukuoka, Shizuoka, Yokohama and Fukushima.

Authorities have issued heatstroke alerts for 19 of the country’s 47 prefectures.

Meanwhile, a cold air mass is flowing into western and eastern Japan at high altitudes. Moist air from a tropical storm formed on Monday is flowing into areas around western Japan. Due to this, rain clouds are developing in some parts of the Shikoku and Kyushu regions, among other areas.

Rainfall of 30.5 millimeters was recorded during the hour through 5 a.m. in the city of Miyazaki and 30 millimeters in a district of the town of Shimanto in Kochi Prefecture.

Atmospheric conditions are expected to also become very unstable during the day in the Kantokoshin region, which includes Tokyo, with temperatures rising. This could bring torrential thundershowers to some places.

Weather officials are warning of flooding in low-lying areas, landslides and sudden swelling of rivers. They say lightning strikes, hail and gusty winds including tornadoes are also possible.

People are advised to seek shelter in sturdy buildings when there are signs of thunderheads approaching.
