After covid wiped out 300,000 cats (with the government doing nothing), now many cats are going missing ( https://in-cyprus.philenews.com/local/constant-cat-disappearances-raise-concerns-green-party-reports/ ). Not to mention laws are so lax, that people are constantly abusing their animals and nothing is being done about it! There is supposed animal police who also just gets paid to do nothing. Why is this?
Why doesn’t Cyprus care for its animals?

Animal police gets paid and does nothing?
That would presume that the Real police does something.
Thank you for bringing that out. I honestly do not understand why they do nothing. For me cats in Cyprus are a part of our identity. Tourists come and feed them love them, and we have them and we dont protect them. Once again our government shows they dont care about nothing
They disappear without dead cats being found? This can’t be happening on a large scale without being a localised phenomenon and no evidence is left behind. It’s Cyprus nothing stays secret too long.
Just back from 2 weeks in Paphos and the cats were the least attractive part. Jumping up on tables in restaurants and the smell of cats piss every morning – put me off going back
300k cats in Cyprus? Thats more cats than Cyprus has
Cyprus doesn’t have the same intrinsic value for animals found in Western Culture because it is part of the Levant.
If we are talking simply about cats, the general directive is CNR (catch, neuter, release). Cats are not native to Cyprus (we had them for thousands of years but they are not Native). Their numbers going down is not a necessarily bad in animal conservation terms. Look i have two cats, and i had other cats before them, i love them, but they are a very big threat environmentally speaking. They kill birds, lizards, snakes even insects. Large numbers of cats are a massive danger especially in the countryside. If you love animals you should either adopt and keep in the house or practice CNR especially if you are feeding large numbers. Otherwise what happened to Australia will also happen here. There is already talk about a culling in Cyprus if the situation persists. If you are unaware what happens in Australia have a look https://edition.cnn.com/2019/04/26/asia/feral-cats-australia-intl/index.html#
I doubt 300K cats died during covid. If that happened cyprus would reek so badly and more diseases would spread. Maybe like 10K ? Seems more reasonable
As far as I understand, cat population is self-regulating. Year or two and you have ballance of food/mortality/fertility back.
There was a time when cats were disappearing and I remember people were saying that some people from other cultures were trapping cats and eating them.. So idk if that’s happening again, i hope not.
