Ok so absolute worst-case scenario, Walz played up his intolerance of spices to jokingly lean into the “white people can’t handle spice” stereotype. I don’t think anyone cares. It’s still charming.
Even if he was outright lying, to what end? To get the elusive bland food lovers demographic? Do they expect the American public will really be moved by the revelation the VP candidate hid his spice tolerance from voters?

Nothing in his hot dish recipe is spicier than black pepper. Their gotcha isn’t the gotcha they think it is. Canned mild green peppers aren’t spicy. Paprika isn’t spicy. Medium salsa isn’t spicy, especially when mixed with an entire casserole.
Black pepper actually does have spice, people forget. Obviously not a ton compared to other spices but at least registerable.

If you haven’t seen the video, you should [watch it](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkwZ_A49hb8). I’ve never seen anything like it in politics. It’s the candidate and her VP essentially interviewing each other, but it’s relaxed and sincere and pointed all at once. Like, clearly they are “on message” in the video in that they are both highlighting their biographies (which polling shows voters want more info on). But it comes across as genuine and authentic and… normal. They joke around, they affirm each other, they get serious. They talk about music. Childhood. Trauma. Tacos.
I’m not trying to overstate it… it’s just one 10 minute campaign video, but it kind of floored me to see the way they interact with each other. Can you imagine Trump putting out a video where he and Vance have a relaxed, open-ended conversation? Can you imagine Hillary doing that with Tim Kaine? Obama and Biden probably could have pulled it off, but I came away from that video feeling like we have something really special with the Harris/Walz ticket. The two of them and their dynamic, of course, but also the smart, capable campaign they are running.

But if I ate dinner at a white friend’s house on taco night, it was always 100% of the time “white guy tacos”. Crunchy shell, chopped iceberg lettuce, lightly seasoned ground beef, shredded mild cheddar cheese, diced tomatoes, olives, and probably some mild “taco sauce” or mild Pace Picante Sauce.
