China to restrict exports of another critical mineral used in semiconductors China says it will restrict exports of items related to a critical mineral called antimony. The country is a major producer of the element, which is used in semiconductors and flame retardants.

The Commerce Ministry and the General Administration of Customs said on Thursday that the measure will take effect on September 15 based on relevant laws. They say the arrangement is aimed at safeguarding national security and interests.

They say they will require exporters to obtain a government license by reporting end users and uses, among other information. Violators will face penalties.

The announcement comes amid tightening export curbs by the United States on semiconductors and related products to China.

China implemented export controls on items related to gallium and germanium in August last year. The elements are critical minerals used in semiconductors and other electronic parts.

Beijing also started restricting exports of items related to graphite last December. It is a material used in lithium-ion batteries.
