The operator of Japan’s Tokaido Shinkansen bullet train says it will cancel all Tokaido Shinkansen services between Tokyo and Nagoya on Friday due to a severe tropical storm.
Central Japan Railway Company announced the decision on Wednesday as storm Ampil is approaching Tokyo and its surrounding areas.
The company says it may also cancel services of the Sanyo Shinkansen line that directly connects to the Tokaido line in Osaka. It also says destinations are subject to change.
East Japan Railway Company says delays and cancellation of services are possible for the Tohoku, Joetsu, Hokuriku, Akita, and Yamagata Shinkansen lines from around noon to late evening on Friday.
The company says disruptions are expected to continue on the Tohoku, Akita, and Yamagata Shinkansen lines through Saturday.
East Japan Railway says it will announce details on Thursday, in case it decides to cancel train services.
It says local trains in the Kanto region may also be affected, causing possible cancelations and delays from Friday through Saturday.
The two operators are urging people to consider changing their travel plans.
At around noon on Thursday, Tokyu Railways will also announce details on its train operations.
Tokaido Shinkansen trains have been running at a reduced speed between Mishima Station in Shizuoka Prefecture and Mikawa-Anjo Station in Aichi Prefecture since the Nankai Trough mega-quake advisory was put in place last Thursday.
But Central Japan Railway says operations will return to normal from 5 p.m. on Thursday, as long as nothing abnormal is observed.
