NASA just shut down a planetary defense mission that tracks asteroids. Now what?

I’ve thought about this before. If an asteroid capable of causing massive damage was detected heading on a direct crash course to Earth, I don’t think the public would be informed. People would riot and go crazy if they knew destruction was imminent or even somewhat likely. So this comes as no surprise to me.
