  1. Since the headline feels a bit generic and not descriptive enough:

    > Major changes to the role of pharmacists, including allowing them prescribe for a list of common conditions, have been recommended by an expert taskforce.
    >
    > The initial list of eight conditions are allergic rhinitis, cold sores, conjunctivitis, impetigo, oral thrush, shingles, cystitis and thrush.

    Also:

    > From September, pharmacists will also be allowed to extend certain GP prescriptions from the current maximum period of six months to 12 months.

Couldn’t have put asthma on the list, no? Or will I be cured any day now and they can’t have me off my tits on inhalers?

This happens in the north for a range of conditions the issue though is they really heavily restrict who can avail of it. Great if your a 25 year old woman with a UTI but if your 65 and a day you have to see your GP but still a good service.

It’s a step in the right direction and will hopefully result in a cost saving for the customer and cut down the presurre GP’s are under.

  5. Industry dominated by Women in their 40s now seeks extraordinary powers to facilitate common problems experienced by Women in their 40s. Also bizarrely Shingles and Conjunctivitis – both of which you’d almost certainly be going to the doctor/specialist for to confirm symptoms anyway.

Some cheek given it was the same cohort who basically denied anything with Codeine from being sold OTC ever again, due to widespread systemic abuse of that same category of medicine by that demographic.

If they wanted equality of access to level the playing field for the consumer, take these medications off prescription altogether like they do on the Continent. This will ultimately prove to just be a cynical inroad to upping prices and gatekeeping for the profession.

  6. Don’t mean to poo poo anyone’s parade but are the majority of the initial list (allergic rhinitis, cold sores, conjunctivitis, impetigo, oral thrush, shingles, cystitis thrush) not already fairly treatable over the counter without going to the doctor?

It seems to me like a cultural change is going to be needed rather than simply changing the rules.

give me my inhalers god dam it !

they should be over the counter Ventolin anyway it was easier to get them in front lines of Ukraine then in Ireland

  8. I get a heat rash and quite frankly the standard cortisone cream you get over the counter just does not hack it. If a pharmacist can look at my inflamed arms and give me Betamethasone cream I will be very happy.
