I’ve noticed almost 80% (according to my calcumacations) are moody oul wagons.
They act like the gate keeper, but not to the pearly gates. They hail from the gates of the Hot Country. They even ask you what EVERYTHING’S about and go on as if the Dr. is feckin Bruce Wayne or Little Lord Fontleroy. One even cancelled my appointment because the doctor was ‘just back from holidays’ and she didn’t want to wake him. Like WTF? Thought the days of the Pub Landlord, the Priest and the Geeeeárd were long gone. Not down the sticks. You’d swear these Dr’s were wrapped up in Bubble wrap, made of glass & had to be taken off a high shelf via step ladder, dusted off, Un wrapped and ‘there there’d’ for an hour before their first appointment.
The 20% that are bearable seem to be the young ones, young folks get a bad rap. I think the majority of them are far nicer ppl to deal with. You do get the odd one that’s pissed off at the world for whatever reason, ugliness, shitty boyfriend or whatever but like; why do the job if you’re just gonna treat people like shit one day and be all over them with fake concern the next. Be one or the other. At least with the old wagons they’re exactly that. Anyway I had to get that off my chest. Had to listen to exaggerated breath everytime I asked a question earlier. And made felt like I’m being a time waster or a pain in the ass. Well, that young lady today…I hope she gets a pain in the ass; nothing serious but perhaps a really sore boil or something unpleasant. Karma ya know.
Am I imagining it though or has anyone ever noticed this group of people?

And a good few of them are gossips
I noticed that the doctors seem to get younger and younger. Last time I was there I thought the GP was an intern. Then I realised I’m over 50……..
My GP’s sister is his receptionist. I’m on a long term, recurring script for a drug that won’t change – same drug, same dose every few months, prescribed by the same GP.
Now he’s sound in fairness. Because the script won’t change and neither will my affliction, he waives the usual requirement to book an appointment with him to see if I still need the script, dose is correct etc.
Yet every single time I phone up to ask for a new script I get the same line from her about having to book an appointment with him, and pay €60.
Every single time I tell her ‘can you please speak with the GP, he’s specifically told me I don’t have to do that’- and she won’t fecking budge.
So I reluctantly book the appointment for the following week, wait til the next day when I receive a phone call from the GP saying not to bother coming in, he’ll send a new script to the chemist for me. This happens every single time.
He says he’s spoken to her many times about it, she’s not one for changing.
I’ve noticed it only holds true with GPs. I never have the issue with dentists or consultants in a hospital
They put up with a lot of shit, the general public are assholes.
They know all the secrets. Doctors are afraid to sack them. Keep your friends close, keep the moody gossipy wagons closer.
If you dealt with the people they deal with, I’m sure you’d be just as sour.
I don’t care for their stubborn nature, or the sour tone, but I’m not the one dealing with the physically sick, mentally sick, or people who are entirely convinced they are sick.
I’d say 6 months as a GP receptionist is enough to drive 99% of people mad, nevermind the lifetime most of these people have worked there.
Probably Because 99% of patients are absolute entitled C**ts. Jk.
Having been a non-wagon secretary, I’m pretty sure that becoming awful is the only way to survive it. You’re on the phone all day with people who won’t take no for an answer, and will straight-up lie to you to get their way. And if you give them what they want, you may well catch hell from the boss for doing so. You get shouted at for things that aren’t your fault, expected to do things that aren’t in your job description, and generally get treated like an idiot because you’re “just a secretary”
The only way to survive long-term is to toughen up. You have to be an incredibly strict gatekeeper, and maintain very firm boundaries on what you’ll do/tolerate.
Some people can do that with a smile, but you start hating people pretty quickly when doing that job, so it’s hard not to develop a severe resting bitch face
I’d say they probably jaded, and probably a miserable old job,Johnny has explosive diarrhea,Mary has the clap ,Barry has a swollen big toe.
They started a job hoping to marry doctor macdreamy but he ran off with the practice nurse feic her tight fitting uniform 35 years ago.now all she has left is anger and the tiny bit of power over plebs her position gives her.
Post Office workers are often like this in my experience.
Sometimes you need a wagon, to get shit done.
I mean, they literally are gate keepers to appointments. If they only have 25 appointments to give out for the day but have 90 people calling swearing blind that they need to see the GP urgently, they have to do something.
Also, the fact that you are [massively abusing prescription drugs](https://www.reddit.com/r/Drugs/s/zoeUKyUbhN) might be the reason why they’re not conducive to giving you appointments, versus the people who are actually acutely unwell.
To avoid the wagons send an email to them, I always put in my name date of birth phone number why I’m looking for an appointment and what my symptoms are and to contact me for payment and I never wait more than 24hrs if it’s important. When they have something in writing they don’t ignore it. Because you have proof you told them you were ill and if something serious happened you they’d be in the shit.
As bitter as a witch’s tit 🤣🤣
our local place had an online booking system that worked great, you could see the available slots and book in for an appointment.
They took it away so I asked the young girl at reception. Apparently one of the other receptionists was incensed that people could go ‘around’ her and she had made mistakes because she didn’t check the actual schedule and double booked people. Of course she framed it as some made up bullshit like ‘it was discriminatory against older patients’. But yeah, now you have to wake up and call them at 8:30 on the dot or you won’t get a booking for the next few days.
I’d say problematic assholes. Not a medical condition per se, more a you… you mate. It’s you.
Can anyone here remember the UCC doctor’s secretary?
Complete battleaxe
I was trying to get in contact with a consultant’s secretary just to say if a cancellation came up that I’d be willing to take it at very short notice. I phoned twice one morning in quick succession and both times, it went straight to voicemail. I assumed she was on a call so I tried again a third time a couple of hours later. This time she answered and she shouted (not exaggerating) down the phone to me berating me for ringing twice already. I have to say I was taken aback but I stayed extremely polite and apologized and I just said why I was ringing. Genuinely I have never been spoken to like that in a similar context but I felt I was going to be the loser if I shouted back. Anyway 20 minutes or so passed and she phoned back with a cancellation appointment a few weeks ahead of time!
They do the best at their job?
My place has a voicemail we’re she prattles on for 5 mins before she tells you can’t leave a voicemail.
You can email but they call you back. I call back on my lunchtime and they’re closed. Again no option to leave a voicemail.
Just fucking type an email.
I think my fave was calling me to see if I’m attending my 9am appointment, then when I get there I’m waiting 40 mins cause they’ve obviously double booked.
I’d take the attitude all day if they’re any good. But fuck that.
Have you experience of 80% of Irish doctors secretaries or are you just extrapolating your own view in an effort to colour the rest of us?
They can never get my moms prescription right. Definitely on purpose or just in love.
My husband is currently dealing with 2 secretaries who are nasty pieces of work. They were horrible from the second they answered the phone belittling him.
My husband is the nicest person ever and is extremely polite but was reduced to tears nearly every time he spoke with them. I feel like calling them to myself or leaving heinous reviews. One of the secretaries though is the consultants wife…ugh.
They’re 2 different places too. They’re so rude it boils my blood. Out of nowhere. Every single time. Vile women.
I’d consider myself to be part of the 20% for the most part but the general public can be very difficult people.
I’ve gotten in shit with my doctor multiple times for taking pity and booking in an extra patient into the clinic or booking them in ahead of schedule.
If you’re friendly I’ll bend the rules as much as I can, but if I can’t and you start being a dick you’ll be waiting.
In my short-lived experience as a medical receptionist I got the impression that the receptionist who’s being a dick to you is probably being a dick because the Dr they report to is either a dick or working completely past the capacity to offer proper service. The latter espeeecciiiaaally if that Dr takes medical card patients, the former most probably if a private Dr.
Just my experience /opinion, alot of these workers have far less training/power to make decisions than you’d expect and have probably had to deal with some of the grossest, rudest people possible. Of course that doesn’t apply to everyone, a lot of people are gems, but you’re bound to see some folks during very difficult period in their lives and “front facing” roles like this take the brunt of people projecting frustration & anger.
Honestly if I hadn’t had prior acting experience when I was a medical receptionist I’d have ended up embarrassing some folks – first day on the job minimal training, ending up having some very very *personal* images / descriptions flash before my eyes while this poor fella was waiting infront of me at the window. You’d need nerves of steal to work anywhere near medical services.
You probably need to see someone about your addiction.
Upvote! I haven’t heard ‘wagons’ in absolutely years. Completely forgot there was such a glorious term. Thank you!
You’ll get people very seriously ill and very aggressive people with nothing at all wrong with them who try to come in every week. It wears you down having to keep those out so the sick people can come in.
Last week a report was sent from affidea. Marked urgent – 15 m colloid cyst found in my brain . The report was with the doctor and his admin team. I rang explained if someone could call me as it was urgent. Anyway nothing happened until I received the report on Monday at 7:45 11 seconds. It was urgent – admitted that day and am out a day or so, they are fucking bitches. I have a ten year old. Anyway will live my life now and drop the anger. Did say to the doctor about it

Most of them I’ve ever dealt with have been lovely tbh. Haven’t really had this experience.
Because they failed their tests to be chariots.
They have to work somewhere
